Maybe she had something on her mind after watching yesterday’s telemark video, because she asked, “Next time, could you film my alpine skiing?”
Oh? Strike while the iron is hot. Her iron cools down surprisingly fast…
so the very next day-Sunday or not-we headed to Tsugaike. Of course, we
got on the first gondola. In an empty, quiet setting, she ripped one long
run-whoosh! Then we quickly moved over to Shirakaba Slope for another run.
That was already more than enough footage.
But hey-won’t someone give me some credit for chasing her the entire time
in a full snowplow? No? Didn’t think so. Well…
The truth is, I love filming just as much as I love skiing. And especially
with follow-cam shots, you’d better be a competent skier-otherwise it’s
dangerous. So while filming, in those split seconds, I often find myself
thinking, “I’m glad I’m at least a decent skier.” That’s honestly
how it feels.
As for An, the subject of this shoot-she trained seriously in the 1990s.
That’s why her posture is still razor-sharp. And I, too, have come to
believe-perhaps belatedly-that 1990s skiing was the coolest era. So yes,
I simply love filming her alpine runs.
Her alpine skiing is genuinely cool. In fact, whenever I watch her, I’m reminded of 002 Jet Link from Cyborg 009. Especially when she’s making big, sweeping turns.
But when we say “Jet,” for our generation of skiers, doesn’t that still mean Mr. Kaiwa fromSKI NOW.
Ahh… the ’90s.
