I’ve always liked combining different things when doing things. So this
time too, the approach itself was part of the fun: starting out on electric-assist
bicycles, then hiking the trail in rubber boots, followed by walking on
snow. Then changing gear and stepping into our telemark skis. Just clearing
each stage one by one is enjoyable in itself.
Oh, and this time we added hammocks to the mix as well. It’s not every day that we get to hang a hammock out in the mountains. And above us were giant beech trees wrapped in fresh spring green against a blue sky. No wind today, but not too hot either, and no bugs. Ahh… such a perfect refresh. The tension from the steep first stage just melted away.
The second stage continued beneath the giant beeches, moving here and there while making use of step cuts. Everyone wandered around freely however they liked. It really showed the true charm of heel-free skiing, where walking and sliding blend seamlessly together. And honestly, that’s just so much fun.
And above all, this timing… it’s almost too beautiful.
As for the descent, we took it slow and careful. From the campground, each
of us headed downhill by bicycle. The breeze felt just right and made the
ride even better. At one point we wondered, “A bear? A serow?” ー but
it turned out to be just a huge dog. All of us switching our electric assist
to ON at the same moment became a pretty good laugh afterward.
Anyway, spring-green skiing on Mt. Amakazari is still far from over. Let’s keep heading out with light gear hanging from our shoulders.
