Self-filming: when the person controlling the recording and the subject are the same.
It took about 10 minutes of back-and-forth with ChatGPT to arrive at this definition. Honestly, I’m just grateful. Thank you, modern civilization!
Anyway, I headed out again today for some self-filming. This time I added a tripod and a DSLR to my setup. As expected, when you already know what you want to focus on, skiing past a fixed camera gives you much more reliable footage than shooting handheld.
I started with a back shotーan angle that’s hard to capture by hand. To
make things clearer, I chose an NNNBC setup. The theme was the 6th effect of B-tele’s “Chu♪”: X-extend. It came out quite nicely.
Then I moved to a different spot for some bumps. One decent-sized mogul is all you need. I circled around it, changing angles again and again.
For me, the beauty of downhill skiingーand especially heel-free skiing?is
that the equipment allows this kind of movement. That’s why I naturally
gravitate toward bumpy terrain. It’s one of those moments where you think,
“Ah, I’m really glad I’m skiing heel-free.”
Heel-free skiing is often described as having the advantage of letting
you move your feet forward and back. But personally, I think the real advantage shows when your feet come together. There are different ways to look at it, of course.
Then, conveniently, I found a mogul lane just one step down. I set up the tripod, hit record, climbed back up quickly with a step cut, and dropped in right away. Did that about five times. Yeah… I was pretty out of breath (laugh).
It’s rare to find conditions like this?a mogul lane with no people around, where you can set up a tripod without getting in anyone’s way. In the backcountry you can choose any spot you like, but there are no mogul lanes there to begin with. So I was lucky to catch this short window.
Watching your own skiing carefully, checking whether what you say matches
what you actually doーI think that’s essential for an instructor. And
every time you film, you notice something new.
You film yourself, you watch yourself, and you think for yourself.
The questions and the answers should be within youー
and yet, what remains in the end might just be…
42.
