I walked up the descent route from Renge Onsen in reverse, starting from Kijiya and climbing to the plateau above Wasabi-zawa.
My setup was NNNBC with Madshus Glittertind MGV, 200 cmーfully in walking
mode.
I started skinning right away, but partway up the snow began sticking badly to the skins and things got messy. From there on I removed them and continued climbing using the step pattern. The view from the plateau beyond Wasabi-zawa was as lovely as ever. And the giant Nezuko tree still stands there just as it always has, which made me very happy to see.
For the return I headed downhill toward Shiraike Pond. I had already decided not to make turns at allーonly traverses and kick
turnsーso my mind felt light and relaxed. The slope is mostly north-facing,
so I expected good snow, but there were icy patches here and there, adding
a bit of thrill. It turned into very fun skiing.
Once again this year I was able to walk across the frozen pond, and this time I even took a hammock break. A sure sign that the deep winter season has passed.
From Shiraike Pond the descent continued in the same styleーtraverses and
kick turns. The beech forest actually rolls gently, so there are natural
stopping points scattered throughout. The game is simply to spot one and
ski straight toward it. No turns neededーand that’s exactly what makes
it fun. Long skis run straight like missiles, after all.
A joyful day of skiingーtrue ski wandering.
P.S. A technical breakdown may follow.
