「美し過ぎる……」。
そう言いたくなるときがある。

「美味し過ぎる」とか「嬉し過ぎる」もそうだけれど、
決して品の良い言い回しではない。
それでも、想定を軽々と超えてこられると、
思わず「嗚呼、ごめん……」と、そんな言葉が出てしまう。
きっと、あの「過ぎる」という表現は、
心が受け止め切れないときの、素直な降参のサインなのだと思う。

そして今回の紅葉が、まさにそれだった。

もう、降参です。
あなたの勝ち。どうぞ、どうぞ。
私はその圧倒的な美の片隅を、
ほんの少しだけ、自転車で走らせていただきます。

ああ、日本の紅葉は、本当に素晴らしい。

“Too beautiful…”
There are times when that’s the only thing you can say.

It’s the same with “too delicious” or “too happy.”
Not exactly refined expressions, perhaps,
but when something effortlessly leaps far beyond what you had imagined,
you can’t help but blurt out, “Ah… I’m sorry.”
Maybe that “too” comes out as a kind of honest surrender?
a sign that your heart just can’t contain it all.

And this autumn foliage was exactly that.

I give up.
You win. Go ahead, take it all.
I’ll just ride my bicycle quietly along the edge of your overwhelming beauty.
