Tateyama / First Turns of the Season
It all started from a casual chat that suddenly took off?and before I knew it, I was heading up to Tateyama.
To catch tomorrow’s clear blue skies, I checked into the mountain hut the night before. Quite a luxury move.
(And yes… I ended up extending my stay for one more night.)
Snow conditions were the best in recent years.
The slope where I usually have to mark the rocks with traffic cones was, this time, almost completely smooth.
My gear for the trip was the XPLORE setup.
With step-cut skis, I climbed effortlessly and glided down.
I remembered that YouTube clip, “THE FARMER,” which left a strong impression on me, and thought, why not try something like that?
It was 6:00 a.m.
That magical time when the sky slowly brightens from darkness.
I really love sunrise and sunset hours?quiet, still, almost cosmic.
Alone, I walk. Alone, I carve my turns.
And in those moments, I can’t help but think: I’m so glad I ski.
I made about a dozen runs.
In photos it might look like I covered a wide area, but from the hut, looking
back, I realized I’d only “tilled” a tiny patch of the whole slope like
a backyard garden, or more like a balcony planter.
Still, pure satisfaction.
The perfect first ski of the season.
Back in the room by 7:30.
Breakfast from my lunch box.
The sky stayed clear all day long.
