Mountains, skiing, fishing?they’re all better alone. I guess I’ve always chosen things I can do by myself, things that let me be alone. Now that I’m over fifty, I finally realized that?and I must say, I’m kind of impressed with myself for catching on.
And then there’s the idea of a second place (← see below for what ChatGPT had to say about that). That too, in the end, is something built on one’s personal (solo) perspective. It takes time, being alone, and slowly settling in for it to take shape. It’s not something you just agree with because someone else tells you about it?this is a different kind of world altogether.
So, what am I trying to say here? Basically, I don’t do the usual kind of “guiding” when it comes to the mountains, skiing, or fishing. I place a lot of value on being alone in nature. Even if it’s just for a short time.
If there’s something?some small trigger?that helps someone find their way into that space, and if I can be of some use there, then great. That’s the position I stand in now. “Nature” and “solitude.” “Slowly but surely.” “Step by step.” That feels right. That feels natural.
And so, onto this recent fishing trip (← finally getting to the main point, right!?). This is another place I’ve come to know well through repeated solo visits. Just a couple of hours this time. Spent it with some familiar char who’ve come to know me too, in their way.
That’s the kind of fishing I do. Nothing more, nothing less.
